Palette Table: A Fusion of Japanese Tradition and Modern Design

Misaki Kiyuna's Award-Winning Table Redefines Space

Discover the innovative Palette Table by Misaki Kiyuna, a design that marries the traditional Japanese Chabudai with contemporary needs and aesthetics, earning the Iron A' Furniture Design Award.

Embracing the Japanese heritage of floor seating, Misaki Kiyuna introduces the Palette Table, a design that breathes new life into the classic Chabudai. The table's inception was a direct response to the evolving social dynamics brought on by the pandemic, prompting a reimagining of communal spaces and personal interactions. Kiyuna's design stands out for its unique three-circle configuration, promoting a versatile and inclusive environment for gathering, working, and leisure.

The Palette Table's distinctive shape is more than just visually appealing; it's a testament to thoughtful design. The large central depression invites users to sit comfortably around the table, while the smaller curved lines delineate personal space, fostering a sense of closeness without confinement. This innovative design eliminates the inconvenience of hard-to-reach corners, offering a seamless, rounded surface for various activities.

Crafted from oak wood, the Palette Table is a testament to the designer's commitment to quality and sustainability. The design process was meticulous, balancing aesthetic appeal with structural integrity. The table's dimensions, 1440mm by 846mm by 340mm, were carefully considered to ensure ergonomic comfort and to complement the flow of daily life.

Functionality meets whimsy in the Palette Table's interactive features. The curved surface cradles the user's elbows, promoting good posture, while the overlapping circles subtly define work zones. A playful touch is added with a small hole in the tabletop, inviting curious cats to peek through or allowing users to store and retrieve items with ease. The bottom plate's rotation adds a dynamic element, infusing the design with a sense of fun.

The Palette Table project, spanning from June to October 2023, was a journey of exploration and refinement. Kiyuna's research delved into the emotional and cultural aspects of design, aiming to create a piece that resonates with users on a personal level. The challenge lay in achieving a harmonious balance between form and function, resulting in a design that is both sturdy and striking.

As a modern reinterpretation of the Chabudai, the Palette Table transcends cultural boundaries, finding its place in various settings from traditional Japanese rooms to modern libraries and resort hotels. Misaki Kiyuna's design is not only a functional piece of furniture but also a symbol of space, embodying the fusion of art and utility. The Palette Table's recognition with the Iron A' Furniture Design Award in 2024 is a testament to its innovative design and the positive impact it has on living spaces.
